Prof. Amalendu Chakrabarty

Prof. Amalendu Chakrabarty has to his credit two Masters' Degree, the first Masters is in Bengali (in Literature) from Gauhati University in the year 1978 and the second is in Bengali (in Linguistics) in the year 1980 where he was awarded the Gold Medal for being the topper. In the meantime, he started working as a lecturer in several colleges of Assam. He joined Gauhati University as a lecturer in 1987. Following this, he obtained his PhD degree from Gauhati University in the year 1994. He served as Head of the Department of Bengali, Gauhati University, twice from 01-05-2006 to 30-04-2009 and 21-10-2009 to 31-05-2019. Besides, he was the Member of Executive Council, Gauhati University during 2014-2015 and 2018-19. He was selected as the Gauhati University Court during 2014-2017 and 2018-19. He also executed as the Dean, Faculty of Arts, G.U. during 2016-31-05-19. He was the Chairman at CCEM, Gauhati University from 2017 to 31-05-2019. He also worked as a Member, Resource Person and Writer in matters related to production of new textbooks of SEBA, Assam.
Prof. Chakrabarty has to his credit an impressive list of publications which include 03 books, over 11 edited books/journals. He has published research articles in over 58 journals. He has also completed a personal research article entitled "The Legacy of Indian Culture in Prabhat Sangeet" funded by Renaissance Artists and Writer Association, Kolkata. Quite significantly, he has compiled the first trilingual Persian-Assamese-English Dictionary along with Prof. Mazhar Asif, J.N.U. (then G.U.), which was published by Gauhati University in the year 2016. He has supervised over 21 PhD and 18 MPhil students till August 2019 on various aspects of Bengali literature. His participation in Conferences is diverse covering over 55 National and International Conferences. He has delivered lectures across several countries such as Japan, China, the U.S.A. and Canada. Prof. Chakrabarty has contributed many articles in Srimanta Sankaradeva Sangha's main as well as local journals. He has also been the Chief Speaker on legion occasions of meetings, seminars and conferences on the Bhakti Movement, on Srimanta Sankaradeva and Madhavadeva across India and also in the 550th Birth anniversary celebration conference held in Kolkata and Madhupura Satra.

The awards and accolades received are also noteworthy. He was awarded "Nolini Kanta Gupta Smriti Puraskar" from Sri Aurobindo Bhavan, Kolkata in the year 2004, "Yadu Samrat P. C. Sarkar Smarak Samman" by Visva Banga Sahitya O Sanskriti Sammelan, Kolkata in the year 2005, "Mathuradas Burha Ata Bonta" by Barpeta Satrar Shakha Satra Samaj, Assam on 11th January, 2020, “Satra Bandhu” award by Asom Satra Mahasabha on 18th June, 2023 and “Sri Aurobindo Purashkar, 2022” by the honourable Governor of West Bengal on 15th August, 2023, for his book “Sri Aurobindo: Veder Anuranan” (Sri Aurobindo: Resonance of theVeda).

Prof Chakrabarty's extra-curricular engagements have been spectacular all throughout. He is the President of Assam Sahitya Sabha, Gauhati University Branch, Pragjyotishpur. He has been the Chairman of Assam Linguistic Minority Development Board, Assam from 03-04-2017 to 10-10-2018. Besides, he has been associated as a Member of the Selection Committee of different Universities, Board of Studies for the Department of Bengali, Programme Advisory Committee (PAC) of SCERT, Assam and Literary Award and Literary Pension Committee, State Government of Assam for three years. He has also been the Chancellor's Nominee of several universities for Department of Bengali, West Bengal and also served as a member of West Bengal College Service Commission.
